NEET Marking Scheme Explained (2026): How Your Score Is Calculated

NEET UG is marked out of 720. Each of the 180 questions carries +4 marks for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, and unattempted questions score 0. So your score = (correct × 4) − (wrong × 1). In 2026 all 180 questions are compulsory — there is no optional or sectional choice.

How is NEET scored in 2026?

NEET UG has 180 multiple-choice questions, split equally across four subjects, for a maximum of 720 marks. The marking is the same for every question:

• Correct answer: +4 marks
• Wrong answer: −1 mark
• Unattempted: 0 marks

Your final score is simply (number correct × 4) − (number wrong × 1). The exam is 3 hours (180 minutes) long, in offline pen-and-paper (OMR) mode, with no per-subject time limit.

How does negative marking work in NEET?

Every wrong answer subtracts 1 mark, so a wrong answer actually costs you 5 marks relative to a correct one (+4 you miss, −1 you lose). Take a worked example: a student answers 160 questions correctly, 15 wrong, and leaves 5 blank.

Should you guess on NEET?

Because a wrong answer costs a mark, blind guessing is a losing strategy over a full paper. But an educated guess, where you have eliminated two options, tips the odds in your favour and is usually worth it. The practical rule most toppers follow:

1. If you are confident, answer.
2. If you can eliminate two or more options, make an educated guess — the expected value is positive.
3. If you have no idea and cannot eliminate anything, leave it blank rather than lose a mark.

What are the passing (qualifying) marks in NEET out of 720?

NEET has no fixed passing mark. Rather than a set number out of 720, you qualify by scoring at or above your category’s percentile cutoff in that year’s exam. The qualifying percentiles are fixed; the marks that correspond to them are calculated from each year’s results, so the exact cutoff changes every year.

Two things students often confuse. First, qualifying is not the same as getting a seat — clearing the percentile only makes you eligible for counselling; the score needed to actually secure an MBBS or BDS seat is much higher and depends on your All-India Rank and the college. Second, because the marks equal to the 50th/40th percentile shift every year, treat any “X out of 720” figure you read as that year’s cutoff only. What changed in the NEET 2026 pattern?

For NEET 2026, the National Medical Commission removed the optional Section A/B format that had been in place. Earlier, each subject had 50 questions (35 compulsory plus a choice of 10 from 15); now each subject has a single set of 45 compulsory questions with no optional choice.
