How to convert CGPA to percentage in CBSE

To convert CGPA to percentage in CBSE, multiply your overall CGPA by 9.5. The official CBSE formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 9.2 becomes 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%, and a CGPA of 8.0 becomes 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. CBSE arrived at the factor 9.5 by averaging the mid-points of the marks ranges for grades A1 to G, so a single multiply gives an indicative percentage for your whole result.

How to calculate CGPA

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of the grade points you score in your five main subjects. CBSE gives each subject a grade and a grade point out of 10 based on your marks, then:

CGPA = (sum of grade points in your 5 main subjects) ÷ 5

For example, grade points of 10, 9, 9, 8 and 9 give a CGPA of (10 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 9) ÷ 5 = 45 ÷ 5 = 9.0. The sixth (additional) subject is not counted in the main CGPA. Each subject’s grade point comes from its marks:

How to calculate CGPA from percentage

To calculate CGPA from a percentage, reverse the formula: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example, 87.4% ÷ 9.5 = 9.2 CGPA, and 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. This is useful when an application form asks for CGPA but your marksheet only shows a percentage.

Subject grade point vs overall CGPA

CBSE gives each subject a grade point out of 10. Your overall CGPA is the average of the grade points of your five main subjects. To find an individual subject’s indicative percentage you can multiply that subject’s grade point by 9.5 the same way. The × 9.5 factor applies to the Class 10 grading system; always report exactly what a form asks for (grade point, CGPA, or percentage).
