How to Convert CGPA to Percentage (CBSE): The ×9.5 Formula Explained

By the Mentora Academic Team · Updated 1 August 2026 · 5 min read

CBSE converts CGPA to percentage with one official formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 9.2 equals 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. To go the other way, divide: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. The 9.5 multiplier comes from averaging the mid-points of CBSE’s grade bands.

If your marksheet shows a CGPA but a college or form asks for a percentage, CBSE gives you one simple, official conversion. This guide explains it, shows how CGPA itself is built from grade points, and covers the reverse conversion.

What is the CBSE CGPA-to-percentage formula?

The official CBSE formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Multiply your overall CGPA by 9.5 to get the indicative overall percentage.

Example: a CGPA of 9.2 → 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. A CGPA of 8.0 → 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. You can do this instantly with the CBSE percentage & CGPA calculator.

How is CGPA calculated in the first place?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of the grade points you earn in your main subjects. Each grade corresponds to a grade point on a 10-point scale. The widely used CBSE grade-to-point mapping is:

Marks rangeGradeGrade point
91–100A110
81–90A29
71–80B18
61–70B27
51–60C16
41–50C25
33–40D4

To find CGPA, take the grade points of your main subjects, add them up and divide by the number of subjects. CBSE’s reporting has changed over the years, so always read your own marksheet and any official CBSE circular for the exact rule that applies to your result.

How do you convert percentage back to CGPA?

Reverse the formula: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. So 87.4% ÷ 9.5 = 9.2 CGPA, and 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. This is handy when a form asks for CGPA but you only have a percentage.

Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5?

The number 9.5 is not arbitrary. CBSE arrived at it by taking the mid-points of the marks ranges for grades A1 to G and averaging them across a large set of results. The average worked out to roughly 9.5, so multiplying the grade-point average (CGPA) by 9.5 gives a good estimate of the equivalent percentage. It is an official, recommended conversion — but an indicative one, not an exact remark of every subject.
